It's National Black Women in the Arts Week, so we're celebrating some of the Black female artists who bring Star Wars to life for us all. Today, we're showing some love to the author Justina Ireland!
Justina Ireland's literary accomplishments are no joke! She's a New York Times bestselling author and has been nominated for and won several literary awards. One of her biggest books is Dread Nation, a historical reimagining of the Civil War. And that's just outside of Star Wars!
Her Star Wars contributions alone get her into the Star Wars writing hall of fame. She's written Lando's Luck and Spark of the Resistance, two equally fun and compelling books. Within Star Wars though, her real crown jewel is the High Republic. Justina Ireland alone has written three High Republic books and co-written two with Tessa Gratton. These books include some of the most fundamental pieces of storytelling in the project, including Phase I's A Test of Courage (introducing the character of Vernestra Rwoh, the first High Republic character to appear on-screen in The Acolyte), Phase II's Path of Deceit and Phase III's Defy the Storm.
Her Star Wars journey is far from over as well. This year we have TWO Justina Ireland Star Wars books to look forward to- The High Republic Phase III's A Valiant Vow and a prequel to The Acolyte, Wayseeker.
Justina's Star Wars storytelling is some of my favorite. Vernestra Rwoh is far and above my favorite character in the High Republic, and Justina Ireland has written so much about her and what makes her so great. She generally has a great attention to detail when it comes to character arcs and personalities, and her stories are so much fun to read! She knows how to write energetic action scenes and tie every detail together for a satisfying conclusion.
You can check out Justina Ireland's website here! Make sure to read her phenomenal books (both Star Wars and otherwise) and keep an eye out for A Valiant Vow and Wayseeker!
